Appliance repair is one of the more accessible skilled trades to break into, and the major and commercial side pays well for technicians who can diagnose sealed systems and foodservice equipment. Certification is not broadly required, which lowers the barrier to entry, but a few credentials open up the better-paid work. Here is the path from getting started to a skilled technician.
Get the training
Most technicians come in through one of two routes.
- A college program in appliance repair or appliance servicing
- A three- to four-year apprenticeship, learning on the job with an experienced technician
You do not need a certificate to start in most provinces, so many technicians begin working while they train. Build hand skills first on common repairs, then move up to sealed systems and diagnostics.
Sort out certification and the gas ticket
This is where the credentials matter, and it is easy to overstate them, so here is the honest version.
- Trade certification is compulsory only in Alberta, and voluntary but useful elsewhere
- A provincial gas fitter licence or gas appliance technician certificate may be required for gas-appliance work, plan for it if you want gas ranges, dryers, and commercial cooking equipment
- A Red Seal endorsement is available and lets you work across provinces
Add the skills that pay
- Refrigeration and sealed-system diagnosis
- Commercial kitchen and foodservice equipment
- Gas appliances, with the gas ticket to back it
- Brand and factory-authorized service certifications
Land your first role
Apply to local appliance repair shops and service companies, emphasize any electrical, mechanical, or refrigeration background, and be clear about your gas ticket status or your plan to get one. Set up a job alert on a board built for the trade so new openings reach you before they fill, because shops hire steadily and move quickly when a capable technician appears.
